This Drafts workshop is in 2 parts on consecutive Sundays.

Understanding and using drafts is an essential part of weaving, but can also be a stumbling block especially for new weavers.

The aim of this workshop in 2 parts is to demystify drafts. In part 1 you will learn to  read and follow patterns and structures such as those you find in books and magazines. Then in part 2 you will learn to use drafts to design your projects or to analyse how a fabric might have been woven.

These two workshops can be booked independently or you can book them together at a 10% discount.

Part 1 - Reading and Using Drafts

Aimed at early stage weavers

  • You will learn the terminology and elements that make up drafts; their function and how to use them.

  • You will learn how to record the information from your own projects and how to read and interpret drafts found in commonly used books.

  • You will learn to recognise basic weave structures from their drafts and so know what to expect from a pattern.

  • You will also learn about cloth sett and understand what impact that would have on your draft.

Part 2 - Analysing and Designing with Drafts

Building on the previous workshop, and aimed at intermediate weavers

  • You will learn to analyse drafts for possible effects and how you might use them in designing.

  • You will learn about scale, repeats and distortions.

  • Through exercises and analysis you will develop the skills to identify elements of a fabric and go on to re-construct how it might have been woven.

  • These skill will lead to a greater understanding that will help you to design your own fabrics, patterns and effects.
